Leaders can Make or Break a Community

Culture of godly leadership (Hebrews 13:7)

  • Our leaders at all levels serve with character, competence, and conviction.

  • A spirit of collegiality pervades, with our people trusting our leaders and our leaders trusting our people.

  • We continually identify and train godly leaders for all dimensions of our ministry.

Beginning this Sunday we are beginning to collect names to serve as elders and deacons. These officers work with me to steer the church, overseeing our ministry, property and finances.

Elders serve by governing the church in Christ’s name. They received this task when Christ entrusted the apostles and their successors with the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 16:19). Elders are thus responsible for the spiritual well-being of God’s people.

Deacons serve by showing mercy to the church and to all people. They received this task in the early church when the apostles designated special persons for the work of mercy (Acts 6; 2 Cor.8-9).

Full job descriptions are available in the church lobby or download the elder and deacon job description here.

Over the course of my life, I’ve worked in different churches and held secular jobs. In both arenas, a good leader can make or break the feeling of community. I had one job where my manager literally watched horse races all day. I’ve had others who micromanaged and wanted me to put on our shared calendar every break. I’ve had elders want to put me on a quota for church growth. Others wanted to turn church services into jazz concerts.

A few times, however, I’ve seen godly, praying people who put self-interest behind them and who focus on God’s priorities. That’s what we currently have here at Cascade CRC. That’s the type of leadership team (aka ‘Council’) that I pray will continue.
