A New Year, A Renewed Mind: How to Make Bible Reading a Habit in 2025
Happy New Year! As we step into a fresh year, many of us are thinking about new beginnings and setting goals for ourselves. But what if this year, we focused on a goal that truly transforms us from the inside out? A goal that shapes not just our actions, but our very thoughts and desires?
This is where the practice of regular Bible reading comes in. It's not about legalism or checking a box; it's about encountering the living God and allowing His truth to permeate our hearts and minds. John Mark Comer wrote:
Doctrine does matter — very much — but not to “pass the test” and get into heaven. It matters because we become like our vision of God. The goal of reading Scripture is not information but spiritual formation. To take on the “mind of Christ. “To actually think like Jesus thinks. To fill your mind with the thoughts of God so regularly and deeply that it literally rewires your brain, and from there, your whole person.
What is Spiritual Formation?
Spiritual formation is the process of being conformed to the image of Christ. It's about allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us, transforming us from the inside out so that we increasingly reflect Jesus in our character, thoughts, and actions. This isn't a passive process; it requires intentionality and a willingness to surrender to God's work in our lives.
Think of it like this: imagine a sculptor carefully chiseling away at a block of stone, slowly revealing the beautiful masterpiece hidden within. That's what spiritual formation is like. God, through His Word and Spirit, is shaping us into the people He created us to be.
Why is Bible Reading So Important?
The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, highlights the importance of renewing our minds:
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able6 to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)
In a world that bombards us with messages that contradict God's truth, it's easy to be passively shaped by the culture around us. But when we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we allow God's Word to counteract those influences, shaping our worldview and guiding our steps.
Practical Ways to Engage with Scripture
There are countless ways to approach Bible reading. The key is to find what works best for you and to be consistent. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
The Daily Audio Bible: This daily podcast provides readings from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. It's a great option for those who prefer to listen rather than read, or for those who want to incorporate Scripture into their commute or daily routine. (You can find more details at www.cascadecrc.org/bible-reading-plan.)
Find Your Rhythm: If a structured plan isn't your style, that's perfectly fine! Start small. Commit to reading a single verse or chapter each day. Consistency is key. Choose a translation that resonates with you (NIV, ESV, NLT, etc.) and experiment with different genres – try reading a Psalm for comfort, a Proverb for wisdom, or a Gospel narrative to encounter Jesus.
Explore Fresh Approaches: Tim Challies, a well-known Christian writer and blogger, recently shared some creative ways to engage with Scripture.10 Here are a few of his suggestions:
Create a Family Heirloom: As you read and reflect on Scripture, jot down your insights, prayers, and favorite verses in a journal. Over time, this journal will become a treasured keepsake that you can pass down to future generations. (details here)
Write Out Passages: Handwriting Bible passages can help you slow down, focus on the words, and engage with the text on a deeper level. It can also be a beautiful way to express your creativity through lettering and art.
"Eat the Bible": This method involves repeatedly reading a single book of the Bible until you grasp its main themes and message. It's like savoring a delicious meal, taking your time to appreciate each flavor and ingredient. You can find resources and plans online, or check out Nate Pickowicz's book "How To Eat Your Bible," which includes a 7-year plan to guide you through the entire Bible using this method.
Use a Biblical Devotional: Devotionals offer bite-sized portions of Scripture paired with reflections and applications. They can be a helpful way to gain new insights and connect God's Word to your everyday life. Challies has a list of recommended devotionals on his website.
Overcoming Obstacles and Making it a Habit
Starting any new habit takes effort, and Bible reading is no exception. Here are a few tips to help you stay consistent:
Schedule It: Just like you would schedule an important meeting or appointment, set aside a specific time each day for your Bible reading. This could be first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or before bed. Find what works best for your schedule and stick to it.
Set Realistic Goals: Don't try to bite off more than you can chew. Start with a manageable amount of time, like 15-25 minutes, and gradually increase it as you feel comfortable.
Extend Grace to Yourself: Life happens. There will be days when you miss your reading time or fall behind on a plan. Don't beat yourself up about it! Just pick up where you left off and keep going. Remember, it's about progress, not perfection.
Find a Friend: Invite someone to join you on this journey. Sharing the experience with a friend or family member can provide encouragement, accountability, and a deeper sense of community. You can discuss what you're learning, share insights, and pray for each other.
Address Common Challenges:
Lack of Time: We all live busy lives, but even a few minutes a day can make a difference. Try incorporating Bible reading into your existing routine – listen to an audio Bible while you commute, read a verse while you wait in line, or keep a Bible app on your phone for easy access.
Difficulty Understanding: The Bible can be challenging at times, but there are resources available to help. Consider using a study Bible with explanatory notes, joining a Bible study group, or listening to sermons or podcasts that explain the passage you're reading.
Feeling Discouraged: If you find yourself getting bored or discouraged, don't give up! Try a different translation, a new reading plan, or a different time of day. Remember, the goal is to connect with God through His Word, so experiment until you find what helps you do that best.
