Faithfulness Tested: Are You Running the Race?

Have you ever wondered what it means to be truly faithful? Sure, we can say "please" and "thank you," but James goes deeper in James 1:12: "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."

What's the Goal?

The Bible uses the word "test" a couple times in this passage. It's not the same as a pop quiz in school. These tests are more like challenges that refine our faith, like a fire burning away impurities in metal. The goal isn't just to survive, but to grow in our love for God. John 6:40 says: "For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day."

What are the Tests?

Life itself can be a test. Getting a raise, for example, could reveal either generosity or arrogance. The test isn't the money itself, but what it brings out in us.

The author uses the illustration of an algebra test. The teacher isn't trying to make you fail, they're revealing what you've learned.

Think about a time in your own life that revealed your true character. Did you react with honesty or did you try to protect yourself? These tests go beyond our actions, they point to the desires of our heart.

The important thing is not to just avoid failing the test, but to let it change us. Maybe a recent failure at work showed you a tendency to blame others. Repentance isn't about feeling bad, it's about changing your heart to trust God instead of yourself.

What's the Reward?

The Bible refers to this reward as the "crown of life." It's not about winning a competition, but about a life transformed by love for God. Are you ready to run this race?

With You;
Pastor Tim
