Finding Hope During the Holidays (and Beyond): When Old Hurts Resurface
The holidays. A time for joy, family, and celebration, right? But for many, this season stirs up feelings of sadness, loneliness, and even grief. It's like the twinkling lights and festive carols illuminate not just our homes, but also the shadowy corners of our hearts where old losses and unfulfilled longings reside.
Studies show that depression and loneliness significantly increase during the holiday season. The American Psychological Association reports that 38% of people experience increased stress during the holidays. This can be due to various factors, from financial strain and social pressures to the absence of loved ones or the weight of past experiences.
If you're feeling this way, you're not alone. And more importantly, there is hope.
In the book of James, we find a powerful message about perseverance and the reward that awaits those who remain faithful through trials.
"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." - James 1:12
This verse speaks of a faithfulness that goes beyond simply "gritting our teeth" and bearing hardship. It's about a deep-rooted trust in God that sustains us through life's challenges and refines our faith in the process.
What Does Faithfulness Look Like?
Faithfulness isn't always about grand gestures. It's often found in the everyday choices we make:
Choosing to get out of bed even when depression weighs you down.
Offering a sincere "please" and "thank you," even when your heart feels heavy.
Finishing a meal even when you've lost your appetite.
Keeping a commitment even when it's easier to give up.
It's about that "Captain America" spirit – "I can do this all day" – or the "Rocky Balboa" resilience – getting up one more time, even after being knocked down.
The Purpose of Trials
James compares trials to tests. Just like a test in school reveals your understanding of a subject, life's challenges reveal the state of your heart and the depth of your faith.
Trials refine our faith. They help us identify areas of weakness and dependence on God.
Trials deepen our love for God. They remind us that true joy and fulfillment are found not in fleeting circumstances, but in an abiding relationship with Him.
Facing the Tests
Every life change, big or small, can be a test. A job loss, a financial setback, a relationship breakdown, even a global pandemic – these can all shake our foundations and challenge our faith.
The key is to remember that the test is not designed to make you fail. It's designed to reveal what's already in your heart.
Think about a time when you faced a difficult situation.
Did you respond with honesty and integrity, or did you try to hide or blame others?
Did you turn to God for comfort, or did you seek solace in unhealthy distractions or addictions?
These moments reveal the true nature of our faith.
The Reward of Perseverance
The reward for those who persevere through trials is the "crown of life" – eternal life with God. But it's not just about escaping hell. It's about experiencing the fullness of joy and intimacy with God, both now and for eternity.
This holiday season, if you find yourself struggling with depression, loneliness, or grief, remember that you are not alone. God is with you, and He will sustain you through these challenges.
Here are a few things you can do:
Reach out for support. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or pastor. Consider seeking professional counseling if needed.
Focus on gratitude. Take time to appreciate the good things in your life, no matter how small.
Spend time with loved ones. Connect with people who bring you joy and support.
Prioritize self-care. Get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and engage in activities that bring you peace and relaxation.
Most importantly, turn to God in prayer. He is your source of strength, comfort, and hope.
Remember, the holidays are a season of hope. Even in the midst of darkness, the light of Christ shines brightly. Hold onto that hope, and trust that God will carry you through.
With You;
