Hezekiah’s Story of Sovereignty & Faith

2 Chronicles 32 tells the story of King Hezekiah of Judah, who faced a great challenge from the Assyrian army.Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, was a powerful and ruthless leader, and he had already conquered many nations. Hezekiah knew that alone, he was no match for Sennacherib in a military battle. In faith and desperation, he turned to God for help.

This is a story of God's sovereignty and grace. God was sovereign over the events that took place, and he used them to accomplish his purposes. Hezekiah was a faithful and obedient king, and God rewarded him by delivering him from the Assyrian army.

This story also highlights the importance of faith and trust in God. Hezekiah's faith was evident in his words and actions. He encouraged his people to be strong and courageous, and he trusted that God would deliver them. God responded to Hezekiah's faith by sending an angel to destroy the Assyrian army.

2 Chronicles 32 is a reminder that God is sovereign and that he is always faithful to his people. His sovereignty calls us into action. We are not passive; we fight, knowing that God is in charge. When we face challenges, we can trust that God will help us if we are faithful to him.

Here are some specific applications of the Reformed perspective to 2 Chronicles 32:

  • We should not be afraid of our enemies, because God is greater than our enemies. Hezekiah was not afraid of the Assyrian army, because he knew that God was greater than the Assyrians. We should have the same confidence, knowing that God is on our side. As Hezekiah said, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” (2 Chronicles 32:7-8)

  • We should trust in God's promises, even when things look hopeless. Hezekiah trusted in God's promises, even when the Assyrian army was at the gates of Jerusalem. We should have the same faith, knowing that God will never fail us.

  • We should be obedient to God, even when it is difficult. Hezekiah was a faithful and obedient king, and God rewarded him for his obedience. We should be the same, obeying God even when it is difficult.

2 Chronicles 32 is a powerful reminder of God's sovereignty and grace. It is also a reminder that we should not be afraid of our enemies, but should trust in God's promises. When we are faithful to God, he will always be faithful to us.
